Here’s a site where you can assess math skills from 5th grade through Algebra 2. Click on the link, give the test (the answers are on the last page), then decide where to place your student’s math level. I make a list of skills, check off when they’ve mastered them and move on. There’s no need (in my opinion) to teach levels that are mastered; instead focus on the weaker skills or skills they haven’t learned yet. Most students will have holes or areas they either are proficent at and other areas where they can prove mastery. Have them take these tests, then order your math books or individual skill lessons.
